Biography: BIOGRAPHY:
Dr Michael Jide Nworji is an Associate Professor and the past Head of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management, Faculty of Agriculture, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam Campus, Anambra State, Nigeria. He hails from Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra state, Nigeria.

Dr Nworji holds a Ph.D. in Agroforestry from Bangor University, Gwynedd, Wales, United Kingdom (2018), an M.Phil. in Forest Resources Economics and Management from University of Ibadan, Nigeria (1990), an M.Sc. degree in Forest Resources Economics and Management from De La Salle Araneta University (former Gregorio Araneta University Foundation), Manila, Philippines (1986), a B.Sc. degree in Forest Resources Management from the University of the Philippines, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines (1984), and a Diploma in Forestry from the Federal College of Forestry, Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Ibadan, Nigeria (1977),

Dr Nworji joined the Faculty of Agriculture, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), as Lecturer II on February 1, 2009 and was upgraded to Senior Lecturer on October 1, 2018 after he obtained his Ph.D degree in Agroforestry. He became the pioneer Head of the newly created Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management (FWM) which became fully operational in the 2017/2018 academic session with the approval of the National University Commission (NUC).

He received the Nigerian Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) scholarship in 2012 to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy degree programme in Agroforestry at Bangor University, United Kingdom. He was also awarded the Lynton Incoll Memorial Scholarship by the United Kingdom’s Farm Woodland Forum that enabled him to present his research papers at the 2014 Farm Woodland Forum annual meeting in Devon, UK. His teaching and research interests include, among others, Forest/Agroforest Resources Economics and Management; Ecosystem Services of Forestry/Agroforestry; Carbon Sequestration/Trading; Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation; Geospatial analysis; Forest Biometrics and Mensuration, Forest Aerial and Ground Survey; Plant Propagation and Landscaping.


To date, Dr Nworji has more than 20 publications to his credit in Learned Journals, Chapters in Books, Refereed Conference Proceedings and Technical Reports. In addition to his academic and research roles, Dr Nworji has worked in various capacities at the Departmental, Faculty, and the entire COOU, Anambra State, Nigeria as follows: Departmental Examination Officer; Faculty exam misconduct/malpractice committee member; General Agriculture Course Coordinator; Departmental Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES); member of Faculty Inaugural/Special Seminar Series; Committee secretary on COOU/HUNAN Agricultural Group China Relationship; Committee member on Interdisciplinary Research Approach on the impact of Climate Change on Health; Committee member for collaborative/partnership from RAYSIDA and other partners; Committee member of University Tree Planting and Climate Action Summit, among others

Prior to joining the Faculty of Agriculture of COOU in 2009, Dr Nworji has worked in various capacities as Forest Officer/Assistant Conservator of Forests, and Wildlife Officer, in Anambra State Forestry Commission, Enugu, Nigeria; Forest/Agroforest Management Consultant, Watershed Research/Development Officer, Community-based Forest Management Organiser, Resource Person and Facilitator of Forest Rehabilitation Projects in the Philippines and; possesses several years of a wide range of forestry and agroforestry experiences in Nigeria, Philippines and the United Kingdom.

He specialises in Forest and Agroforest Resources Economics and Management, and have skills in Forestry project development, planning, management, coordination, facilitation, administration, and monitoring and evaluation, Financial and economic analysis of forestry, agro-forestry, and horticultural projects, Socio-economic and environmental impact assessment of forestry, agro-forestry, and horticultural related projects, Hydroponics nursery greenhouse operations, plant propagation and landscaping. mushroom culture, and urban forestry, plus expertise in various statistical data management packages.

Dr. Nworji has always shown himself to be a committed Associate Professor with over 20 years of experience mentoring students and organising communities from various social and cultural backgrounds, possessing excellent administrative, verbal communication and written skills along with constructive and effective teaching methods that promote a stimulating learning environment. He is dedicated, resourceful and goal-driven professional educator with a solid commitment to the social and academic growth and development of every student. He has proven ability to successfully work to tight schedules and deadlines.

He is a life member of the Forestry Association of Nigerian (FAN), the African Forest Forum (AFF), International Society of Tropical Foresters, the United Kingdom’s Farm Woodland Forum, the Commonwealth Forestry Association (CFA). He enjoys traveling around the world and when he is not engaged in his official academic works, he loves to experiment on the production of mushroom spawn in his private makeshift mini laboratory.
