Biography: | THE BIOGRAPHY OF PROF IKENNA EGUNGWU Preamble Prof Ikenna Egungwu was born into the family of Mazi (Chief) Ude Egungwu of Enugunator, Obeagu, Awgu LGA of Enugu State as the 3rd child and second son. The family background was not rich in gold but very rich in integrity, dignity, humility and spirit of enterprising. His grandfather was very famous but like his contemporaries, he did not invest in the education of his children. To gain academic relevance, his son (my father) had to take up night school programme to make himself fairly literate. It was his love for education that made him to trade a lot of comfort to ensure that all his children, especially the males were graduates. His vision was actualized even though he did not live to witness it as he died in my secondary school class one. Prof Egungwu was singled out among his peers because as a primary 3 pupil, he requested for and secured some money to get into petty trading to support the family and this was done without compromising his desire to excel in his studies. Educational Background He attended Central School Obeagu, St Vincent Secondary School Agbogugu, Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, Enugu State University of Science & Technology (ESUT), Enugu and University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus where he obtained Primary Schools Certificate, WASC, OND/HND, BSc, PGD, MBA, M.Sc/PhD and PhD respectively. He is also an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Stock Brokers of Nigeria. Job History His job history started as an Auxiliary Teacher, Bursar class II and later Senior Officer in the defunct Savannah Bank Nig Ltd where he served his primary assignment as a corp member. His quest for academic exposure made him to seek employment at Madonna University where he rose to Senior Lecturer before joining Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (formerly Anambra State) University where he is currently a Professor in the department of Banking & Finance. He was the pioneer staff as well as Head of Department of Banking & Finance. He has also served as Head of Department of Banking & Finance at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University and also the Coordinator of the Departmental Postgraduate Programme since 2010 to date. He was also a member of both departmental and Faculty of Management Sciences Technical Committee. Community Involvement His love for community development dated back to his days in secondary school as the Secretary General of the Obeagu Students Union and later as Secretary General of Igwebuike Age Grade. He was also for four years the chairman of Obeagu Progressive Union (OPU), Lagos branch and later the chairman of Obeagu Electricity Committee. This followed his activities as the largest single influence in attracting a multi-million Naira Rural Electrification Project to his community. Prof Egungwu was conferred a Chieftaincy title of Onwa in 2002 by his kinsmen in recognition of his development effort. Social Involvement Prof Egungwu is a socialite, although he is not a club lover. He chooses his friends and as such relates with each person in his personal capacity, and given the person’s pedigree. He plays major roles in counseling, educating and reconciling parties/ families. His commitment to providing assistance to the less privileged is limitless, given the level of compassion he feels for mankind. As a member of Catholic Men Organisation (CMO), he participates actively in church activities. Academic Output Prof Egungwu has been described as an erudite academic, having demonstrated this attribute in teaching, supervision and publications. Apart from lecturing students at both undergraduate and postgraduate programme, he has supervised and is supervising the undergraduate, PGD, M.Sc and PhD students in his field. He has also attended many seminars and workshops. Marriage History Professor Egungwu is married to Dr. Ngozi Ursula and the marriage is blessed with God given lovely children. |
