Biography: | BIOGRAPHY Professor Chinyelu Nkiruka Umeaku Chinyelu Nkiru Umeaku is a Nigerian Microbiologist, and a Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli, formerly Anambra State University, Uli, Nigeria, Chinyelu was born in Port Harcourt Rivers State, to Late Chief Stephen and Mrs. Beatrice Ejikeme of Board of Internal Revenue, Anambra State. Her parents hail from Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria. Her father was an astute Administrator and a good disciplinarian that insisted on sound education for his children. Chinyelu started her early education at Women Training Practicing School, Enugu, Enugu State, after which she proceeded to Queen’s School, Enugu for her Secondary education. Her higher degrees with dates are as follows: Ph.D Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria 2014 M. Sc. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria 2006 PGD Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria 2001 HND Federal Polytechnic Idah, Nigeria 1986 She is a certified member of the Nigerian Institute for Science Laboratory Technology, and a licensed Technologist. Her passion for practical research in Science and Microbiology in particular earned her the present job. She is the first Laboratory Technologist in the Department of Microbiology, COOU, Uli. Professor Chinyelu Nkiruka Umeaku is an internationally renowned Scientist and a well-known distinguished academician with 65 publications and 4 books. She is associated as Editor and Member of many online journals. Umeaku has guided over 500 students at undergraduate, M.Sc., and Ph.D. levels in Nigeria. She has developed Antiplasmodial drug from medicinal plants, using Plasmodium berghei-induced malaria in mice models. She elucidated the antibacterial activities of Vernonia amygdalina, Ocimum gratissimum and Garcinia kola. In her study of Helicobacter pylori, she compared the detection methods in individuals suffering from stomach ulcers. She has carried out outstanding researches on the effect of temperature and moisture on the hatchability of intestinal helminths eggs. Umeaku studied Trichomonas vaginalis and Candida albicans in pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in Onitsha metropolis. Under Environmental Microbiology, she characterized rhizosphere microorganisms associated with crude oil environment and used them to remediate the hydrocarbon-polluted environments. She has conducted outstanding studies on the bacteriological quality of drinking water in parts of Anambra State with Salmonella typhi being highly implicated. Under Food Microbiology, Associate Prof. C. N. Umeaku has been able to produce edible milk from the plant, Treculia africana. She has also worked on the Public health implication of ready-to-drink yoghurt, and ready-to-eat meat. Umeaku has attended conferences both internationally and locally including the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM), Berlin, Germany. She enjoyed the Federal government scholarship award for some of her research studies, she has obtained several research grants including TETFUND IBR. Chinyelu Umeaku has given several public lectures including representing the Vice Chancellor at ATPS, UNIZIK, Awka and being a guest speaker at the Federal House of Assembly, Abuja, Nigeria. She has been a member of 20 University Committees including Adhoc Committee on General planning of the the first convocation of COOU. She has also been a visiting Lecturer at Tansian University, Oba, Nigeria. She has been appointed ‘Special Mother’ and ‘Great Daughter’ by Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion. She is a member of 8 professional bodies that includes NSM, ASM, OWSD and STAN. She has represented the University in 8 outside bodies where she served at various capacities including being the Guest Speaker at the 2021 celebration of day of the African child with the theme: ‘30 years after the charter, accelerate the implementation of the agenda for an Africa fit for children’ organized by Federal Ministry of Education at the Federal Government Girls’ College, Nkwelle Ezunaka, Onitsha on the 21st June, 2021. She was the Head of Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Natural Sciences from 2011 to 2013. Research Interests Prof. Chinyelu Umeaku’s research interests are Medical Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Impact Assessment, Bioremediation, Biodegradation, Health benefits of medicinal plants, Immunomodulatory effects of medicinal plants, Parasitology, Medical Mycology, Food Microbiology, Microbial Genetics and Molecular Biology. |
