Biography: Profile of Prof. Gordian Chuks Obi
Gordian Chuks Obi had his early education at the prestigious Bishop Shanahan College, Orlu, Imo State between 1967 and 1972. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and Master of Science degree in Sedimentology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1978 and 1989 respectively. He worked in the Geological Survey of Nigeria, between 1979 and 1991, rising to the rank of Principal Geologist. In 1991 he transferred his service to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka as a lecturer. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 1998 and in the year 2000, he won the Vice Chancellor’s Prize as the best graduating PhD student in the Faculty of Physical Sciences. Between 2001 and 2002 he was on sabbatical in the Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd, Port Harcourt, during which he joined the Society of Petroleum Engineers, SPE. At the end of his sabbatical leave he returned to the UNN and initiated the establishment of the UNN Student Chapter of the SPE in 2003, and subsequently became the new Chapter’s Faculty Sponsor, a position he retained until 2008. At the very first outing during the 2004 NAICE, the new UNN Chapter won both the Best Chapter and the Best Paper-Presenter Awards. In an unprecedented student membership drive, Dr. Obi introduced and helped Section 103 to establish and nurture the SPE at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka. He served as Co-Chairman, Student Activities, Society of Petroleum Engineers, Nigerian Council (2007-2008).

Gordian Chuks Obi transferred his service to the Anambra State University, Uli, in April, 2008 as a professor of Geology. He again introduced the SPE at ANSU (now COOU) and became and has remained the Faculty Sponsor of the COOU Student Chapter.

Prof. Obi is currently the Faculty Sponsor, Society of Petroleum Engineers, ANSU/COOU Chapter, (2008-Date) and a Guest Lecturer to the Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd.
He is an active member of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) and Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM).

Gordian passionately loves teaching, mentoring and assisting the morally derailed/financially less privileged students to discover their talents, just as he loves soccer. He is happily married and blessed with three children.
